Countdown to the commissioning of the satellite ethane cracking project! The world's largest VLEC unloads the first batch of over 51,000 tons of ethane

Release time: 2021-03-10 Click on the quantity:1845

On February 28, the world's largest ultra-large ethane carrier (VLEC) "Seri Everest" leased by Satellite Petrochemical completed its first unloading in Lianyungang.

"Seri Everest" is a 98,000 cubic meter VLEC. The first batch of ethane unloaded this time exceeds 51,000 tons. It is the ethane raw material for the Lianyungang ethane cracking production base of the satellite petrochemical. The loading and unloading work was supervised by Eaglestar Shipmanagement Gas, a ship management company designated by MISC, a subsidiary of the shipowner's Petronas Shipping Company.

"Seri Everest" arrived in the United States on its maiden voyage on December 30 last year, and was loaded with cargo at the newly constructed Orbit ethane export terminal in the Netherlands on January 17 this year. This is also the first second-generation VLEC to export ethane from the new Orbit terminal. This VLEC was built by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and will be completed and delivered in late October 2020.

This is the first of the six largest VLECs in the world ordered by Satellite Petrochemical for the first phase of its Lianyungang petrochemical project. These 6 VLECs are all owned by MISC and signed a 15-year time charter contract with Satellite Petrochemical.

As the largest domestic and top five acrylic acid manufacturer in the world, Satellite Petrochemical is the first domestic private listed company to use propane as a raw material to form a C₃ industrial integration pattern. Satellite Petrochemical signed a Lianyungang petrochemical project cooperation agreement with the National East, Central and Western Regional Cooperation Demonstration Zone (Lianyungang Xuwei New District) in December 2017 to build China's first ethane cracking ethylene plant in Lianyungang.

In March 2018, Satellite petrochemical USA corp., a subsidiary of Satellite petrochemical USA corp., and Sunoco Partners Marketing & Terminals LP signed the "Agreement on the Joint Venture Establishment of Orbit by US Satellite and SPMT" to jointly build a US chemical raw material export facility for the stable operation and future of the Lianyungang Petrochemical Project Carry out import and export trade business to provide raw material supply guarantee. According to the agreement, Satellite Petrochemical will import about 3 million tons of ethane each year to its new Lianyungang ethane cracking plant.

In order to open up the ethane transportation artery from the United States to China, Satellite Petrochemical needed to order a VLEC to transport ethane raw materials for the Lianyungang Petrochemical Project. Among them, the 6 ships built for the first phase of the project are owned by MISC, and 3 were built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries. In addition to the "Seri Everest", Samsung Heavy Industries also delivered the second VLEC "Seri Erlang" in the same series at the beginning of this year. MISC confirmed that the remaining four VLECs of the series will be delivered in the first half of this year, and MISC will also become "the world's largest ethane transportation company" by then.

Ethylene cracking unit is the main unit of Lianyungang Petrochemical's 3.2 million tons/young hydrocarbon comprehensive processing and utilization project. It mainly uses ethane as a raw material for cracking to produce ethylene. Through the construction of two units of the same type and scale in Phase I and Phase II, Satellite Petrochemical Lianyungang Petrochemical Co., Ltd. will become the world's largest single-set ethane-to-ethylene production facility, which is of great significance to the development of my country's energy-efficient and green chemical industry. .
